Radioddity GM-30 Review

It’s a new year and it’s time to go through my prepper checklist. One category of prepping items that I am focusing on this month is communications. A new addition to my communications setup is the Radioddity GM-30 GMRS Radio.

The GM-30 is an affordable, mobile communications radio. With a robust set of capabilities, this handheld radio caters to the unique needs of preppers, ensuring seamless communication in critical situations.

This is my Radioddity GM-30 review for preppers. Lets talk about it.

GM-30 Features

In the world of emergency prepping and SHTF, communication is paramount. Lets review some of the more notable features of the Radioddity GM-30.

Core Features

The GM-30 boasts an extensive range of up to 250 channels, including 30 default channels (22 GMRS, 8 repeaters), and an additional 24 GMRS repeater channels. This versatility allows users to configure multiple repeaters with different CTCSS/DCS codes, providing a tailored and reasonably private communication setup. The radio facilitates easy adjustments on-the-go through both PC and keypad programming, ensuring flexibility and adaptability.

One other feature that I really like is the external microphone and speaker that can clip on to a back-pack strap or a clip in your vehicle. This makes the radio a little easier to operator when using a set channel for voice comms.

Dual Band Scanning and Receiving

One of the standout features of the GM-30 is its dual-band scanning and receiving capabilities. It supports UHF and VHF monitoring in CH/VFO mode, allowing for a precise frequency range setup for channels and CTCSS/DCS scanning. The editable scan list provides users with granular control over scanning preferences, enhancing the overall scanning experience.

Range and Charging Capabilities

Equipped with 5-Watt power and a 15.5″ high-gain antenna, the GM-30 delivers an impressive communication range of up to 5 miles. This range is further extended by its capability to access GMRS repeaters. Some GM-30 operators have achieved impressive distances of over 130 miles when using line of sight and the average distance seems to be more in the 5 to 10 mile range.

The inclusion of an upgraded USB Type-C charging port ensures convenient recharging of the radio or battery, adding a layer of practicality to its design.

Accessories

The GM-30 doesn’t just stop at the radio itself; it comes complete with a comprehensive accessories kit. Two 15.5″ high-gain antennas, batteries, speaker mics, earpieces, belt clips, wrist straps, USB-C cables with an adapter, and a programming cable are all included. This thoughtful inclusion means users don’t have to make additional purchases, providing everything needed for a seamless communication setup.

Additional Features

Beyond its core functionality, the GM-30 boasts a range of additional features that enhance its utility. Clear reception ensures crystal-clear communication, while the NOAA weather receiver and scanner keep users informed about changing weather conditions. The inclusion of FM capability adds an entertainment aspect, making it a versatile device for various situations. The SOS alarm, squelch, VOX, TOT, squelch tail elimination, 6 frequency steps, power save mode, and two power levels (0.5W/5W) contribute to the radio’s comprehensive feature set.

The GM-30 even has a built in flash light! How cool is that!

Radioddity GM-30 Review

First, let me just say that the GM-30 GMRS handheld radio is one of the most affordable and reliable handhelds that I have used thus far. While the radio itself is not ultra weather resistant, it suites my needs for general communications and also provides the scanning capabilities that I was looking for.

Being able to communicate during an emergency is paramount to surviving an SHTF emergency. Without communications we’d be blinded by the fog of war. As a prepper, communications is one of my top priorities when it comes to maintenance and gear. The GM-30 has so far made an excellent addition to my communications setup.

The GM-30 allows you to program in your own communications frequencies with your own privacy codes. At the same time, you can program the GM-30 to only scan certain frequencies that you choose in the form of scan groups.

I programed my GM-30 to scan our primary communications channels as well as the local emergency management services frequencies and local NWS and NOAA frequencies (National Weather Services). This allows me to get more accurate weather reports for the area and also stay informed on what EMS and Fire Departments are up to.

One recent afternoon we were getting some mild sleet and rain. My GM-30 picked up a call from the local EMS dispatch with a multi-vehicle accident on the Interstate. This allowed me to call my wife to advise her to take a different route. The GM-30 allowed me to get a heads up on what was going on.

I picked up two GM-30 radios for around $79.99 on Amazon and I am very pleased with the quality and usability of the radio.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the GM-30 GMRS Radio stands as a formidable choice for preppers seeking a reliable communication solution. Its professional-grade features, long-range capabilities, and thoughtful accessories make it a standout option in the world of handheld radios. Whether in the great outdoors or navigating urban environments during SHTF, the GM-30 is poised to be an indispensable tool for those who prioritize preparedness and effective communication.
